CANTERBURY STOCK

Im Increase In Five Years

The number of sheep and cattle in Canterbury has risen by more than one million during the last five years.

Figures supplied to the North Canterbury Agricultural Advisory committee this week showed that stock had increased from 3.970 million in 1963 to 4.922 million in 1968. Between 1967 and 1968 the number of stock increased by 150,000 which was a rise of 3.1 per cent.

The figures indicated a sharp use in the number of beef cattle during the 12 months. From 132,671 beef cattle in 1967 the figure rose last year to 153,224. During the same period there was a small increase in dairy cattle from 57,300 to 57,900. The committee was told that the increases in stock were keeping pace with the projected expansion to 1972 when it was expected there would be 5.35 million in the area.
