Clubs Permitted To Cover Pitches

A recommendation that cricket pitch covers, where available, be used before senior matches for the remainder of this season was approved by the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening.

The covering of pitches this season will be used as a trial by the association’s grounds committee. Should it prove successful, a recommendation will be made that covers be used on all senior grade pitches next season, Mr D. J. Elder said. said that no special consideration would be given to covered pitches should postponements be necessary in the last two rounds. This was in reply to several committee members who considered that some teams would have an unfair advantage.

The covering of the pitches —suitable equipment is available at Elmwood Park, Ham and Lancaster Park—and its advantages would be examined at the end of the season after which the grounds committee will recommend that it be extended to all senior pitches, Mr Elder said. Default.— The Riccarton club advised that it wished to default its fourth grade team for the remainder of the season. Support.— The committee decided to support a request from the Sydenham club to the Citv Council that no Rugby matches be played on the area which includes its pitches this winter.
