Carrying hammer-and-sickle flags, more than one million people crowded on to the huge army parade ground in the centre of Calcutta yesterday to celebrate the victory of the Communist-dominated United Front Party in the West Bengal State General Election last week, and the routing of Mrs Indira Gandhi’s Congress Party.
