WAIROA QUAKE
Residents Alarmed (N.Z. Press Association) WAIROA, Feb. 24. A strong earthquake, with a violent wrenching motion running from east to west, was felt in Wairoa and throughout the surrounding district at midnight last night. It lasted from three to four seconds but caused no damage. Buildings creaked under the impact and residents of the borough became alarmed at the severity of the jolt The earthquake was followed by another of smaller intensity at about 2 a.m. In Wellington a spokesman for the Seismological Observatory said that the first earthquake had a centre 200 miles from Wellington and a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale.
