PUBLIC SERVICE PANEL NAMED

The names of eight Public Service permanent heads who will assist the State Services Commission for the next two years in deciding appointments to certain senior positions were announced today by the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Government Administration (Mr Marshall).

The panel replaces one which has served for the last two years. Members are:— Dr D. P. Kennedy, Direc-tor-General of Health; Mr H. G. Lang, Secretary to the Treasury; Mr J. M. McEwen, Secretary of Maori and Island Affairs; Mr R. J. MacLachlan, Director-General of Lands; Mr M. J. Moriarty,

Secretary, Industries and Commerce; Mr R. J. Polaschek, Secretary for Transport; Mr A. L. Poole, Direc-tor-General of Forests; and Mr V. W. Thomas, Controller of Customs. Mr Marshall said that Mr Kennedy, Mr MacLachlan, Mr Moriarty and Mr Poole were re-elected to the panel. Other members were not available for re-election.

In the last two years special commissions have made 48 appointments to 29 departments. Fourteen were to the position of a permanent head and 34 to that of deputy or assistant head.

The panel members were elected recently under the State Services Act, 1962. Under the act appointments to senior positions in departments are decided by a special commission comprising the chairman and a member of the State Services Commission and two permanent heads appointed from the elected panel by the Minister of State Services.

Appointments to these positions are exempt from appeal.
