Young Ewes Sell Well At Amberley

Two-tooth ewes, which predominated in the selection at the Amberley northern section ewe fair yesterday, met a much better sale than at the Amberley southern sale a week ago, and for the average run of young ewes values were close to those ruling at Hawarden last Thursday when the market improved.

There were not the glamour top sales that were recorded at the earlier fine wool fairs, but the feature of the sale was the sound inquiry for average to good sheep at rates ranging from about $7 to $B.

Older ewes formed a fairly small segment of the offering and again while they did not reach spectacular levels they sold to close to Hawarden rates for the average style of ewe.

The offering dropped away by almost 3000 head on last year from 17,102 to 14,265 and included 8047 two-tooths (8630 last year) and 6218 older ewes—a big decline on the 8472 penned last year.

The east coast hill country sheep came forward in very good order and condition and compared very favourably with previous years. The entry of younger ewes was notable for its evenness, including pen after pen of good useful well-grown sheep, with an absence of thin and low condition sorts.

The sale began on the younger ewes in the presence of a quite small attendance, but in spite of this it was soon apparent that there was a good demand and pen after pen sold between] the $7 and $8 marks, with anj odd offering bettering this level.

The selection did not include many really top-line sheep and| the top price for the day was only $9.20 compared with $10! last year, and while the better! sheep were possibly barely up to last year’s rates and the good sorts were only on a par, the average to good sheep, which predominated in the selection, were making about one dollar more than last year.

For 18 pens sold yesterday the average was $7.60 compared with $6.50 for a similar number of pens of the same vendors’ sheep sold last year. Compared with the southern section sale a week ago some observers put the improvement in the market at as much as 70c.

In comparison with Hawarden, while the top sheep were not making anywhere near Thursday's rates, prices for the average sheep were comparable. The best of the two-tooths made from about $8 to $9 with! one sale at $9.20, average to good brought from $7 to $8 and others from $5.90 to $6.80. TOP PRICE The top price of $9.20 was; paid towards the close of the day to the P. and K. M. Lc Cren Children’s Trust (One Tree Hill) for 120 Corriedales. Last year the top figure for the One Tree Hill entry was $B.BO, but the top money paid during that sale was $lO. For 580 making from $7.40 to $9.20, the Le Cren ewes averaged better than $8.40. and among their selection were 229 which brought $8.70 each. At the same stage of the sale Cavgill and Williams (Hidden Hills) also sold 100 Corriedales at $9.

Last year’s market topping sheep came from the Fitzsimmons’s Riverview property and yesterday H. A. Fitzsimmons’s Riverview sheep averaged more than $8.60 each with 107 making $8.90 and 125 $8.40.

R. A. Harrison (Wharenui, Domett), who was strongly represented in the sale, also had, a pen of 114 at $9, and forj 652 making from $7.60. with 4801 reaching $8 or bettering that: money, the average was close toj $8.20 a head.

For 89 Corriedales R. D. Par-1 sons (Nga Motu) also received $8.70. W. Dampier-Crossley, of Glen Albyn, Parnassus, who made up to $9.10 last year, had 63 Corriedales yesterday at $8.60 and for 185 sheep, all of which reached or exceeded $B, his average was almost $8.24. E. J. D. Good (Matiawa, Kekerengu) with 66 halfbreds was also paid $8.50. OLDER EWES There were only small offerings of four and flve-year-old ewes—less than 20 pens of four-year-olds and only about 12 of five-year-olds. Between this year’s sale and last year’s there was not a very great difference in the level of values for four-year-olds, but more vendors possibly showed a slight decline than did others who showed a slight gain. For similar sheep offered in the two years there was only a few cents difference in price.

Here again prices were on a rather different level to Hawarden, but for the average run of sheep making from about $5.20 to $5.90 values were not far apart. The best of the four-year-olds sold from about $6 to $6.60, with average to good at $5.20 to $5.90 and others ranging down to $3.90.

Jedburgh Company (Cheviot), which topped the market last year at $7.05, repeated the performance yesterday with 150 Corriedales bringing $6.90. E. G. O. Rutherford (Beltana) also had 176 Corriedales making $6.60 (last year $5.45) and sales at $6.30 were made by the estate W. N. Masefield (Ellerton) for 217 and by E. C. Trewin (Glenstrae, Oaro) for 330. and J. G. Latter (Kekerengu Station) sold 150 halfbreds at $6.20.

The picture was very similar in the five-year-old section to that in the four-year-old department. Again there was little difference in prices between the two years, with some vendors making from about 20c to 45c per head less and others 40c and 45c more. While these were not the top sales recorded at Hawarden the average to good sheep were not far behind Hawarden prices. For five-year-olds the best in the selection made from about $6 to $6.10, with average to good at $5.10 to $5.65, with others at $4.30 to $4.90. One of the best sales here was made by B. D. Wide Inquiry The attendance built up somewhat as the sale progressed, but a factor in the general soundnesss of the market was that there were widespread buying orders and sheep went to Marl borough. Ashburton, Rakaia, and even to South Canterburv, and Darfield, Halkett, Southbridge and Brookside. The following is a range of values, with figures for last year’s fair being given for comparison:— 1969 1968 8.00 to 9.20 8.20 to 10.00 to 7.00 to 8.00 7.00 to 8.00 to to 6.10 to 6.90 5.90 to 6.80 4.50 to 5.75 6.00 to 6.60 6.30 to 7.05 to 5.50 to 6.20 5.20 to 5.90 to to 5.00 to 5.40 3.90 to 4.90 4.00 to 4.80 6.00 to 6.10 5.70 to 6.30 to 5.00 to 5.60 5.10 to 5.65 to to 4.40 to 4.70 4.30 to 4.90 3.10 to 3.80 E.
