Students Excluded

A total of 148 students had been excluded from the University of Canterbury, the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) reported to yesterday’s University Council meeting. Last year’s comparable figure was 137.' During a discussion on future spending on universities and possible limiting of entry, the Pro-Chancellor (Mr T. H. McCombs) said in his experience the majority would pass any entrance examination.

Some students would be able students who had gone to pieces at the onset of adulthood or could not deal with exposure to the university situation.

Mr C. H. Perkins said that university education should not become too onesided, but should develop the full individual and complete person.

The fact that 148 students had been excluded did not indicate the failure rate, but that 148 had failed to get two units in the last two years.
