C.O.R.S.O. Gift To Children

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund will be assured of a minimum of $BO,OOO from the proceeds of its 1968 campaign, the New Zealand Council of Organisations for Relief Service Overseas has advised U.NJ.C.E.F. C.0.R.5.0. has requested U.N.I.C.E.F. to submit more projects to the value of $NZ75,000 with a view to adopting them as part of its 1969 campaign

“In efforts such as this we see • the true role of C.0.R.5.0. as an organisation co-ordinating the generosity of New Zealanders and the expertise of overseas organisations," Mr R. H. French,

organiser for C.0.R.5.0. in the Canterbury-West Coast area, said in a statement.

“This $BO,OOO represents a considerable gift by the people of New Zealand towards the relief of suffering among children overseas.”

Material aid collected or purchased by C.0.R.5.0. in New Zealand for sending overseas included clothing, footwear, milk biscuits, and milk powder. The figures did not include the intensive project and development work done in many countries as a result of cash donations. This work could account for another $lO million of overseas aid throughout the 25 years C.0.R.5.0. has been working, said the statement.

Last year C.0.R.5.0. depots throughout New Zealand collected and packed 2067 bales and 527 cases of clothing,

footwear and goods to a value of $1,821,000. In the Christchurch area the organisation packed 384 bales of clothing, 16 cases of clothing, four cases of honey, three cases of milk powder, 134 cases of footwear and nine cases of toys. The value of these items was $308,005. During last year C.0.R.5.0. sent 2124 bales and 441 cases to the following:— North Africa (13 ships), $175,000; Africa (one ship), $930; Biair* (one ship), $4480; Ceylon (four ships), $55,830; Hong Kong (11 ships), $358,775; Indonesia (four ships), $5950; India and Tibet (14 ships), $549,860; Korea (30 ships), $685,710; Pacific islands (11 ships), $29,665; Philippines (one ship), $1990; and Vietnam (six ships), $52,780—96 ships carrying goods worth $1,870,970.

C.0.R.5.0. has been supplying aid since December, 1944, when the first shipment of clothing left New Zealand for Greece. Between then and June, 1945, three shipments were sent overseas. These represented 480 cases, containing 45,500 garments valued at $67,000. This was the first step in an effort which has sent $29 million worth of material to other lands in 25 years. The distribution has been: North Africa, $6,745,760; Africa, $101,100; Borneo, $80; Middle East, $2,089,098; Ceylon, $53,288; Greece, $2,689,066; Hong Kong, $3,799,415; Indonesia, $95,040; India and Tibet, $5,082,621; Pakistan, $1,988,994; Korea, $5,624,840; Pacific islands, $134,450; Philippines, $81,775; Vietnam, $66,300; and other countries $677,760—a total of $29,229,587.
