First-Innings Win To Sydenham

I The captaincy of B. J. Salt land the leg-spin bowling of D. IL. Gallop were the rocks upon which the batsmen of Lancaster Park foundered in their attempt to pass the Sydenham first-innings total at Lancaster Park. The pitch was in superb condition, the out-field fast and the Sydenham bowling looked weak by any standards, and yet with all this in its favour Lancaster Park failed by 29 runs. The match was tvon and lost in the first hour and a half of play. Lancaster Park began with 40 runs and no wickets down but in the above time five fell for only 36 runs. From then on it was an up-hill struggle, apart from A. M. McKendry all the recognised batsmen were out and the formidable total of 279 loomed ahead. The rest of the day’s play was most absorbing with the lower order batsmen showing tenacity and some skill and McKendry batting in an accomnlished manner. Before lunch he batted carefully but freely, choosing the ball to hit and hitting it well, and had he continued in this vein after lunch his side could well have reached

the target. It was a very good innings and ended only when he attempted an impossible run to retain the strike.

Gallop bore the brunt of the Sydenham bowling and bowled extremely well. He could expect no help from the pitch and so resorted to variations of flight and pace, doing this so well that no batsman took control. For long periods he bowled with Salt, who also commanded respect, but it was the shrewd bowling changes and restrictive field placlngs by Salt which as much as anything carried the day for Sydenham. - Umpires: Messrs J. F. Pope and S. E. Browne.
