First Test 100 By N.Z. Woman

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Showing the application of a true test player, Pat McKelvey gave New Zealand women’s cricket one of its proudest days at the Basin Reserve on Saturday.

Miss McKelvey made 139 not out against England to become the first New Zealand woman to score a century in test cricket.

In all, she batted 331 minutes, showing a wide array of strokes and immense powers of concentration. Thanks to her fine innings, New Zealand was a healthy 280 for eight at stumps. The innings was a satisfying reply to Miss McKelvey’s critics. During the Halleyburton - Johnston Provincial tournament she scored less than 50 runs and her selection in the national side was strongly criticised. But on Saturday, Miss McKelvey, with her almost chahceless innings, vindicated her selection in the best possible manner.

She had excellent support from the sturdy Canterbury opener, Janice Stead, and the aggressive, young North Shore player, Carole Oyler.

Two Good Stands With Miss Stead, she added 90 for the second wicket, and with Miss Oyler, 75 for the third wicket. Their running between the wickets, especially that of Miss Oyler, was superb. England showed tenacity both by its bowling and fielding. The spinner, Edith Bakewell, was extremely accurate and there was good fielding by Edna Barker, Jill Cruwys and the wicket-keeper, Shirley Hodges. Scores:
