Ultimatum Refused SOCCER COACH "KICKED OUT”
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND.
The national soccer coach, Mr J. Schwanner, said yesterday that he has been relieved of his duties because he is not prepared to live in Wellington.
He said that the chairman of the New Zealand Football Association, Mr J. C. Cowie, delivered an ultimatum to him concerning him living in Wellington after the annual genera) meeting of
the association on Saturday. Family, many friends, a house in Mission Bay and the fact that “1 like Auckland very much” were factors influencing his decision to remain in Auckland. Mr Schwanner said that even if he went to Wellington, necessitating the selling of his house, he might be, at short notice and at any time, transferred back to Auckland.
“1 have felt that in my two years as national coach I have made a good job. I have prepared the national team and the progress for the World Cup series has been good," he said. “Hurt At Decision” He was very hurt at the decision. “They gave me two years, then just kicked me out because I would not live in Wellington,” Mr Schwanner said. “1 am sorry for the New Zeala* d boys. There is much talent here. I wish good luck to New Zealand soccer. Mr Schwanner has in the past had many coaching offers, including a number from Europe. But he has declined them because he likes New Zealand. He is employed by Rothmans Sports Foundation.
In Wellington last evening Mr Cowie said that Mr Schwanner had not been given any ultimatum. He declined to comment further.
