Testing Of Wheat
Reflecting the resumption of harvesting of wheat this week the Wheat Research Institute had its busiest day for quite a long time when it received 250 samples for testing on Thursday. The institute had then received a total of 2000 samples for testing from the current harvest and the director, Mr R. W. Cawley, said that while baking quality continued to be quite good it was not as good as last year when quality was the highest on record.
The recent unsettled weather with some rain falling almost every day has caused some concern' about the possibilty of sprouting, but there has been no sign of it in samples received so far. There have, however, been two bug-damaged samples—one from Central Otago and another from North Canterbury. ■
