GIFT FROM CHURCHES
Hospital For Biafra A prefabricated children’s hospital with equipment, valued at $52,000, was shipped from Vienna to Biafra recently by Caritas-Austrja, according to a newsletter received at the Christchurch office of the National Council of Churches from Joint Church Aid. In addition 21 tons of canned meat and more than a ton of special baby food were also sent from Vienna. The consignment was valued at about $27,000. The gifts have been made in a continuing effort by American and European church relief agencies to avert starvation among Biafran refugees. The newsletter says that the World Council of Churches’ division of interchurch aid, relief and world service has forwarded $250,000 to Nordchurchaid, a member of Joint Church Aid. Another $250,000 has been set aside for the Christian Council of Nigeria, to increase relief programmes in federal-controlled areas of Nigeria. Since the start Of the Joint Church Aid airlifts to Biafra last April, 1100 flights have been made from Sero Tome to the Uli airstrip in Biafra. Each week a chartered aircraft is flown from Northern Europe to Sero Tome with about 20 tons of food and medical supplies needed with special urgency in Biafra.
