AIRPORT LEVY

Proposal Deferred (N.Z. Press Association) ' AUCKLAND. Feb. 3. The international airport committee of the Auckland Regional Authority today deferred consideration of an airport-passenger levy proposal until nearer the completion of the permanent terminal building. The suggestion that revenue should be obtained by imposing a levy on passengers using the airport was made by Mr L. R. Simpson, of Onehunga, in a letter to the chairman of the authority (Mr T. H. Pearce). Mr H. J. Barrett said at today’s committee meeting that New Zealand appeared to be one of the few countries where levies were not imposed on passengers. The committee’s chairman (Mr I. W. McKinnon) said landing fees were paid by international airlines. Fees were collected from passengers on this basis. The indirect levy from landing fees amounted to $5 a passenger. “I don’t feel we are justified yet in considering a passenger levy as such and 1 think it should be deferred for further consideration," said Mr McKinnon.
