Invercargill Wool “Very Firm”

(New Zealand Press Association)

INVERCARGILL, February 3.

The market for coarse crossbred fleece and lambs’ wool during the first day of the fourth main Invercargill wool sale of the season today was “very firm,” said the official report issued by the Invercargill Woolbrokers’ Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Commission.

Of the two-day offering of 43,446 bales, 23,390 were offered today, leaving 20,056 to be sold on Wednesday.

The offering is made up of 67 per cent ewe fleece, 5 per cent shorn hogget, 2 percent woolly hogget and 3 per cent lambs’ wool, with the balance in oddments.

The fleece wool, the bulk of which fell in the 44/48 range was generally well prepared and of a good colour. However, in the ewe fleece lines and increasing propor-

tion of tender and cotted wool was seen.

“Odd lines of ewe fleece showed a good length and soundness but the shorn hoggets contained a greater proportion of sound wools,” the report says. The small offering of new season’s lambs’ wool showed a reasonably good colour. Some lines were well picked, but others showed dust discolouration and shed stain.

“The oddments generally showed a good colour but mixed lengths in some lines detracted from their value. “The market could be quoted as follows: fine and medium crossbreds. very slightly easier; coarse crossbreds. unchanged; strong crossbreds, very firm; skirtings, necks and oddments, unchanged: other oddments, up to 21 per cent easier; lambs’ wool, very firm. The sale progressed at steady rate, the main competition coming from the Continent, with support from the United States. Bradford was bidding sparingly.

Trade Vehicles.—The Union Steam Ship Company’s motor vessel Kawerau is due at Lyttelton from Wellington today with about 90 trade vehicle’s for local discharge.
