Another Record Falls To Miss Shipston

MASTERTON. Four New Zealand records were broken at an international swimming contest at Masterton last night. Japan dominated most of the events but Karen Conway, of Rotorua, beat the Japanese girl, Kaiko Osaki, in the diving event, repeating her Timaru success. N. Waseda and I. Curry were both timed at 2min 4.8 sec in the 110 yards freestyle, but the Japanese swimmer
was given the winning place. This time broke the New Zealand record by o.7sec. The sole New Zealand win in the swimming events went to Miss T. K. Shipston (Canterbury) who in the women’s 440 yard freestyle beat her own record by 2.ssec to finish in 4min 44.95ec. In the 100 yards womens breaststroke. Miss C. Shibata broke the New Zealand record by o.4ssec. She will not, however, be able to claim the record as all short-course records can only be claimed by New Zealanders. Time: 2:49.5 (New Zealand record by I.9sec). Men’s 440 Yards Freestyle.— N. Waseda 1, A. Kindred 2.’1. Curry 3. Time: 4:22 (New Zealand record by 2.Bsec). Women’s 110 Yards Freestyle.— M. Kobayashi (Japan) # 1, C. Whiting 2, T. K. Shipston 3. Time: 1:4.2. Women’s 440 Yards Freestyle.—T. K. Shipston 1. M. Kobayashi 2, J. Wright 3. Time: 4:44.9 (New Zealand record by 2.ssec).
