PENSIONERS’ COTTAGES

Subsidy Not Available The Health Department is unable to approve of the Paparua County Council’s application for subsidy on the final 12 pensioner cottages in the proposed block of 36 at Manurere Street, Hornby. Reporting to the council last evening, the finance committee said that the department’s decision was because of existing commitments in pensioner housing, and the probable amount of money available in the 1969-70 financial year. The report said the department had been asked to give the number of cottages that had been established in districts with a similar population to that of the county. Arrangement For Meeting The council-agreed to arrange a meeting with local members of Parliament and the chairman of the Aged People’s Welfare Council (Dr H. R. Donald). “It seems funny if the country can’t afford housing for pensioners," said the chairman (Mr D. H. Warren). The council last year received subsidy for 18 of the units, and was told last evening that the State Advances Corporation would lend $41,700, the balance of the cost.
