SLOW SALE OF STUD RAMS

“The Press’' Special Service MASTERTON, Jan. 7.

The South Island were among the most active of a large bench of reluctant buyers when only 50 lots from an offering of more than 100 stud rams were sold at the Wairarapa stud sheep breeders fifty-first annual stud ram sale in Masterton yesterday.

Breeders from all parts of New Zealand were represented, but after a spirited start bidding fell away sharply and the total sale of Romney rams was at a disappointing average of only $441.50. The response was also disappointing to an offering of nine Southdown rams, only two of which were sold, at an average of $lB5. The complete offering featured a well balanced and •ven line of rams, with the best being only a little more outstanding than some of the much cheaper lines. The top price of $3lOO was paid by the Invercargill syndicate of Messrs Gault and

Humphries for a nicely proportioned and well conditioned ram offered on account I

of the prominent Masterton ’ breeder, Mr N T. Wyeth. The local breeders, Messrs! A. and J. Grey, of East Taratahi, went to $l5OO for a ram offered on account of R. W.
