Davis Cup Player Has To Struggle

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. While B. E. Fairlie (Auckland) and O. N. Parun (Wellington) coasted home in their second-round singles matches in the New Zealand tennis championships yesterday, their Davis Cup team-mate, R. N. Hawkes (Wellington), did not find the road to victory so easy.

So far in the tour- | nament Hawkes has ' been out of touch, struggling against players he should have 1 disposed of far more i comfortably. i He beat L. Cadman (Auck- i land) in the first round on i Monday, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5, and yejr , terday he had to come from ' behind in the second set to , take his match against D. • Turner (North Shore), 6-4, 1 64, 6-1, after the first two ' sets were particularly even. * Greasy courts due to heavy i overnight rain delayed the ] start for 21 hours yesterday ' morning, play finally begin- ( ning at 11.30 a.m. 1 Top Juniors Beaten The two Linton Cup pros- ' pects, J. G. Simpson (North | Shore) and the national un- < der-19 champion, 1. Baudinet ' (Hawke’s Bay), both suffered j losses. i

At one-set all against the Auckland hard-court champion, D. Cassidy, after winning the second, 6-3, with far more attacking play than he had shown in the first, Simpson’s game went to pieces to such an extent that he lost the third set 6-0. However, he fought back, on one service break to take the fourth, 64, but in the vital fifth and final set, with both players hitting cautiously, Simpson showed signs of tenseness to drop it 64, and lose the match.

Baudinet went down, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 12-10, to the No. 3 Remuera player, P. Fletcher. H. Irvine (Rhodesia), a semi-finalist with Fairlie, Parun and Hawkes in the men’s singles at the North Island championships last week, scored an easy, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, win over F. Schwanner (Auckland).
