Rain Welcomedin North Canterbury

Rain on Monday evening and yesterday morning brought relief to many parts of North Canterbury after three hot days.

About a third of an inch of rain fell overnight in Rangiora, where temperatures up to 85 degrees had been experienced in the previous three days, and another 20 points fell yesterday morning. Little rain fell in the afternoon.

The drought area near Cheviot should get some relief from rain which fell between 10.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.pi. ; yesterday. Mr I. E. Winskell I recorded nearly half an inch . of rain at Caverhill, about • three miles north-east of the township. “While the rain may delay some haymaking and late shearing in the Cheviot area it is expected to benefit late peas and late-sown grain crops and fattening crops," said Mr R. A. Milne, a farm . advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture at Rangiora. “Two or three days of overcast weather are needed for the district to get the full ; benefit from the rain.” An application for drought relief for part of the Cheviot district has been submitted to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys).
