Second Cornwell Race To Takapuna Boat

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Takapuna boat Tawaki II yesterday won the second race in the Cornwell Cup yachting competition.

Heretaunga won the first race, yesterday morning, although the results of this event are still to be confirmed. The protest committee is hearing two protests.

The weather was calm and warm for the afternoon race, in contrast to conditions for the first race which Heretaunga won in blinding rain and a moderate northwesterly. Heretaunga fought off a tough challenge from Ponsonby and Worser Bay. In the afternoon Tawaki II won from Seeker (Worse! 1 Bay). This race was also won by three lengths, all of the boats finishing within about 10 minutes of the winner. Results:

Moth Events

A 17-year-old Napier yachtsman, G. Wiig, using his knowledge of local conditions, scored easy wins in the first two races of the national Moth-class yachting championships in Napier yesterday. Wiig’s craft, Stirling Moth 11, revelled in conditions which had many of the visiting yachtsmen in trouble—a brisk 20 knot wind and a choppy sea.

Wiig won both the races by more than 4min. M. Selwood (Christchurch) finishing second on both occasions with his yacht Dibrucol.

With three races remaining, Wiig leads with a possible 200 points, from Seiwood (160), 1. Williams (Tauranga) (111) and G. Coleman (Wellington) (107). The present Junior Moth title-holder, T. Bartlett, considered one of Wiig’s major rivals, finished third in the first race, and then sailed extremely well to gain fifth place in the afternoon event after capsizing twice. Results: —
