DRILLING RIG SEALED OFF.—The barge used to pump mud into the gas blow-out at the Marlin drilling rig in Bass Strait pulling away after the completion of the plugging operation. The sea round the rig is calm for the first time in more than a month, with just the remains of a mud slick drifting away. Mr “Red” Adair (right), the United States expert called in to deal with the problem, is shown arriving at Longford heliport, Sale, Victoria, after leaving the rig. The main drill stem of the platform will be removed and replaced with a special valve head. After tests for further leakage, the well will be blocked with concrete.
