OCEAN RELAY

New Surfing Contest What is thought to be the first ocean relay race in New Zealand will be organised by the South Brighton Surf LifeSaving Club on January 25. Ocean relays have become a leading part of the surfing sport in Australia and large crowds often follow the craft along the beach The relay will begin from the Waimairi club’s pavilion and the flotilla of canoes and boats will be rowed to the North Beach club and then to New Brighton before finishing at the South Brighton club. At each stop the four rowers must be changed but the steerer may remain for the whole distance. It is likely that most of the club’s will not have sufficient trained crewmen to make a fresh change at each stop. The first crew will row the last leg. The canoes and boats will compete in seperate sections, and if the race is as successful as expected it will be held annually.
