FLIGHT TO MOON
Some Missions Longer Although the Apolln 8 lunar orbit space capsule is intend-| ed to travel more than 400.000 | miles the mission will fall far short of the manned snaceflight distance record The same is true of hours spent in space. The Apollo 8 mission later this month is expected to last for less than 150 hours—about 6fi hours from earth to moon. 20 hours in moon orbit, and about 57 hours to return to earth. Thus. Apollo ■ S will rank no higher than fourth in the roster of I manned space endurance, flights. Early last month the Apollo 7 flight kept astronauts in earth orbit for almost 264 hours. In August. 1965. two • Vnitcd States astronauts in the Gemini 5 remained in orbit for more than 190 hours The endurance record for snaceflisht was set in December, 1965. when two American astronauts remained in earth orbit for more than I 330 hours.—(U.S.l.S.)
