Party held a substantial early I lead after a fifth of the votes ! cast in Guyana’s General ! Election had been counted. I With about 76.000 votes ! checked of about 370.000 cast ! yesterday, the P.N.C. was leading with 41,000, compared ! with 33,000 for the People’s | Progressive Party led by Dr j Cheddi Jagan. The voting is by proper-1 ! tional representation, and the ! votes counted are roughly: equivalent to eight seats and five seats respectively for the P.N.C. and the P.P.P. in the National Assembly of 58 seats. Counting has been slow and the first results camel through several hours later (than expected. Delays have 'been caused by the necessity for taking ballot boxes to six ! counting offices established for security reasons.
