POISONED FAMILY

Meat Pies Suspected Meat pies bought in a Christchurch shop are suspected by the Health Department of having caused food poisoning in a city family last week. A mother and her two young children were affected. “Staphylococcal toxin was the probable cause of the trouble, and meat pies purchased in the city were suspected,” said the department’s report, “but as none of the food was available for analysis this could not be proved." Another 12 cases of infective hepatitis were also reported last week, including eight in the worst-hit area— Aranui and Wainoni. Seven of the 12 were children. The only other case of notifiable disease was one of pulmonary tuberculosis, affecting a man in his sixties.
