Member Announces Election Plans
The Member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) announced in Timaru last evening that he will allow his name to go forward for selection for the New South Canterbury electorate in next year’s general election.
His announcement was made at a meeting of the executive of the South Canterbury electorate of the National Party. The South Canterbury electorate includes about 90 per cent of the present Ashburton electorate. The remaining 10 per cent includes the Ashburton borough and is transferred to the new Ashburton seat which will also include some of the existing Selwyn electorate. The South Canterbury seat will include the Waimate area, which is not included in Mr Talbot's present electorate, and will also take in the Kurow and Omarama districts. Party organisers assess that Mr Talbot can be assured of a majority of more than 2500 in the new electorate. He has lived at Longdowns, Temuka, all his life and farms an intensive cropping, sheep and cattle fattening property. In the House Mr Talbot has been a member,.of the Government caucus ' committees on land and agriculture.
He is also a member of the select committees on defence, social services, and petitions.
