SLOW SIDE OF THE MOON RACE.—The first stage of the Apollo-Saturn 5 space venture takes place on this giant “crawler” at a speed of half a mile an hour. The “Crawler,” as it was named at Cape Kennedy recently, has 16 engines totalling 6000 horse power, and can move a 12-million lb payload. Mechanics are checking the giant transporter before the vehicle begins a six-hour trip of three miles and a half to the launching pad. Each shoe on the tread weighs a ton.
