Sir, —For Father Christmas to declare an amnesty just when Scrooge is “phasing out” Government relief work (cf. the close-down in nasseila tussock grubbing) is, if not an irrelevant and cunning stunt, at least as ill-timed an action as the official opening of Paremoremo on Human socalled Rights Day, and no doubt founded, like that monument, upon shaky logic and lack of research. Or was someone bowing down to the overseas expert again? “.. . New Zealand is exciting. It’s a laboratory, a crucible ... Almost no unemployment . . .” (I quote selectively.) Yeah? “Give us another of those, thanks. Bit more salt on this time, eh?”—Yours, etc,, J.H.B. December 13, 1968.
