Quick Promotion For Swimmer

The versatile Weelston Park swimmer, Sharon Anderson, graduated from age group to open class in a very short time after winning live events at a carnival In the Papanul peel on Saturday morning. I Only four hours after completing her programme at the Papanul age group meeting, she was in action at an open carnival in the North Beach pool. She justified her promotion by returning the second fastest time for girls over 100yds freestyle. Woolston Park is one of thr newest clubs in the Canterbury centre, and the deeds of Sharon Anderson. Richard Pye and Carl Trotter kept its name to the fore at the Papanul carnival. Miss Anderson won a race In each of the four individual strokes, as well as a medley event, and Pye was the faatest under 14 boy in butterfly and medley and was second fastest In freestyle. Trotter outswam his rivals in both the front and back crawl in the under 12 class. The under 14 and under 12 girls’ sections drew the biggest fields and. as a consequence produced the strongest competition. In the older age group, the Elmwood girls. Elizabeth Somers and Kathleen Me Manus, continued their keen rivalry. Miss Somers proving to be the fastest al treestyle and backstroke, and Miss McManus taking the honours in medley and butterfly. Julie Parrant (Sockburn Park) also swam well in several strokes. The outstanding under 12 girls were Jenny Miil» (Sockburn Park), who had the fastest times in freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly, and Judith Tomlinson (Elmwood), who was among the fastest three competitors in each of the indi-

vidual strokes. Not unexpectedly, she had the best performance in the medley. The host club, Papanul. obviously relished the prospect of competing in its own pool and gave Its best performance at an inter-club carnival for several seasons. Two under 14 girls L. Buchanan (freestyle) and K. Dwan (backstroke) won their races In good times, while G Pearse, P. Buchanan and T. Robinson performed well in boys’ freestyle races. Pearse was the fastest boy in the under 14 class and his time for 30yds, SOsec. equalled the best oßort In the under 1( section. Although the distance for all the races in the individual strokes was only 50yds, the unheated water upset some competitors. A few pulled out before completing the dlstsnce. and a number withdrew from races after one immersion. The carnival was run smoothly however, and one pleasing feature was the efficient work carried out by a number of young Papanul officials.
