SALES OF LAMB

Italy Buys More (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. Lamb sales to Italy had increased from 300 tons two years ago to about 1000 tons this year, New Zealand's assistant trade commissioner to Rome, Mr W. J. Falconer, said tonight. Mr Falconer arrived in Wellington tonight with his wife and two children after completing a two-year tour of duty in Rome. Italy was one of the few Continental countries which did not have quantitative restrictions on imports of lamb. Tariff restrictions were the only barrier, Mr Falconer said. Unfortunately, there is some consumer prejudice against New Zealand lamb; it is too big and it is frozen, he said. The Trade Commission and 1 the Meat Producers’ Board | had been working on promotion of lamb in Italy, but much more promotion would be needed before substantial sales were established, said Mr Falconer.
