MANGAWEKA DAMAGE
Minister’s Tour (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Dec. 15. The Minister of Customs and member of Parliament for Rangitikei, Mr Shelton, spent Saturday afternoon touring the flood-damaged Mangaweka area. “The conditions are really terrible; the worst I have seen in hill country,” he said. One farmer had estimated that he would need between $4OOO and $5OOO to get his farm back into its original order. Mr Shelton said hundreds of chains of fencing had been flattened by landslides.
He said he intended to have discussions with the Rangitikei Catchment Board to decide what help it could give in regrassing the scarred countryside.
