Currency Breaches Cost Agent $650

(New Zealand Press Association) WHAKATANE, December 13. For his part in breaches of the Currency Regulations to which he and 26 others had pleaded guilty, a Whakatane travel agent, Charles Richard Whittle, was convicted and fined a total of $260, with $l3O Court costs and $260 solicitor’s fees, by Mr W. M. Willis, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court today.

These amounts were made ' up of a $lO fine, with $5 1 costs and $lO solicitor’s fee, ’ on each of 26 charges.

The cases against Donald Clareborough Butler, chairman of the Whakatane County Council, and Wilfred

Thomas Law, chairman of the Rangitaiki Drainage Board, were adjourned, without conviction being entered, until January 29. The Magistrate said that by that time the Counties Amendment Bill may have become law, and that these two men would not then forfeit their local-body seats. The Magistrate. also adjourned until January 29, without entering conviction, the case against Anthony Morrison, a detective, for his part in breaches of the regulations to which he and others had pleaded guilty. All the others were convicted and fined amounts ranging from $75 down to $2O, with court costs and $lO solicitor’s fee, on each charge.
