Intensive Training For V.S.A. Begins

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. Those taking up Volunteer Service Abroad teaching assignments next month began an intensive training course in Wellington today. The six-day course is being attended by 23 adults and 36 school-leavers. They will attend lectures at Victoria University on the

teaching of English as a foreign language, and will learn the language and customs of the country of their assignment. Two other main studies are in teaching methods and practice, and detailed aspects of volunteering. The evenings will be used for further study, language practice, and discussion. The course is being run by the selection and training officer of Voluntary Sendee Abroad, Miss K. Clark. Voluntary assistance is being given by V.S.A. council members, returned volunteers, teachers resident in Wellington, staff of the English Language Institute, and those teaching foreign languages. Ten volunteers will teach in Borneo, while others will go to Thailand, Tonga, Fiji, and the New Hebrides.

Road Open Again.—State highway No. 1, between Mangaweka and Taihape, is now open to all classes of traffic, an Automobile Association spokesman said yesterday, but extreme care, should still be taken.—(P.A.)
