“Loyal To Referees”

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The appointment of referees to control international matches was strongly criticised at yesterday’s meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s council. The Auckland delegate, Mr R. L. Bunk, said: “Under the system operated we have not assured ourselves that we always have the best referees on the panel. There has been a lot of criticism about our standard of refereeing,” Mr Bunk said. “It appears the Auckland referees don't agree to the system of appointment. This is surely a matter of opinion. We have been loyal to our referees and pick those we feel are the best,” the chairman, Mr T. C. Morrison said. It was agreed that the council write to the Auckland Referees' association, which raised the matter expressing confidence in the appointment board and ythe system of appointments.
