LONG DAY IN FIELD

West Indians Held At Bay (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MACKAY (Northern Queensland). Queensland Country kept the powerful West Indies in the field all day yesterday while scoring 271 for the loss of eight wickets on the first day of a two-day match. Strong late batting from Country held off a somewhat fame bowling attack as the day's play closed. The West Indian captain, G. S. Sobers, seemed reluctant to dismiss the Queensland tail-enders—obviously not wanting to start batting so late in the day. Just before stumps, Sobers recalled W. W. Hall, after long spells of spin from B. F. Butcher and R. B. Kanhai. but the Queenslanders resisted stoutly. G. McNee and J. Howells put on 25 runs for the eighth wicket, and McNee and G. Dymock added 41 in an unfinished ninth-wicket stand. Scores; Country 271/8 (T. England 60, N. Parker 59. McNee 51 not out, R. Doig 48; R. Edwards 4/30).
