HONG KONG INFLUENZA

14 States Hit In U.S. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 13. The Hong Kong influenza epidemic has forced the closing of some schools and colleges in the United States and raised absenteeism in business and industry, the Associated Press reports. The new strain of influenza has spread from Los Angeles —where officials say almost 300,000 adults and children are absent from work or school—to New York where Adelphi University in suburban Garden City cancelled undergraduate classes until January 5. The National Communicable Disease Centre said deaths from pneumonia and influenza had exceeded normal expectations and termed the influenza outbreak an epidemic.

The centre said outbreaks of influenza and respiratory diseases from 30 states had been reported, with Hong Kong influenza confirmed in 14 states, Puerto Rico and the the District of Columbia.
