The Professor will be the first head of an independent department and responsible for its organisation. Hitherto archoeological studies have been carried out in a section of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. This section now has six academic posts with adequate supporting staff and laboratory facilities, and currently, seven doctoral research scholars. The new department will engage exclusively in research and post-graduate training. Regional interests are Australia, New Guinea and the south-west Pacific and, increasingly, Southeast Asia. Funds for field and laboratory research are liberal. There is a developing concern with the relationship of environment, ecology and ethnoigraphy to the prehistory of the •• region. i The normal salary for this post is $A13,000 per annum; ; superannuation is on F.S.S.U. ; pattern with supplementary [benefits.
