TROTTING Allakasam Has Good Two-Mile Record

Although no mare has won the New Zealand Cup since Loyal Nurse was successful in 1949, Allakasam’s form over two miles is so good that it will occasion no surprise if she is successful in Tuesday’s $20,000 two-mile event.

Allakasam has had several wins and five placings over two miles, far in advance of anything recorded by any of her rivals.

Her run of success In major rsces, not all of which have been over two miles, began in December, 1966, when she won the Rangiora Cup. Her other major successes have included the Ashburton, Dunedin, Auckland, Rotorua, and Addington Easter Cups.

In addition she made ground late for a fair fourth In the 1967 New Zealand Cup, recording 4min 12sec for the two miles, time which has seldom been bettered by one of her sex In this country. The best time for a mare Is 4min Usee, recorded by Thelma Globe when she finished fourth in the 1955 New Zealand Cup.

Allakasam will be trying to complete a double achieved only by one horse, Johnny Globe. That is success in the Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru and the New Zealand Cup in the same season. Allakasam had her chance wrecked by a breaking horse in the Kalkoura Cup last month, but she brought about her own downfall at the Addington trials on Thursday when she tangled away and was never a danger. She Is not often guilty of such a lapse and she could redeem herself on Tuesday. Chequer Board and Loyal Knight have the best two-

mile form among the. remainder in the cup. Both have had five wins at the distance, while Chequer Board has been placed four times to his northern rival’s three.

Chequer Board has done little racing this season, but he went quite , well at the trials on Thursday. Loyal Knight is one of two horses to graduate to cup class this spring and he looks a very fit hone.

Three Wins Cuddle Doon, Happy Ending and the probable favourite for Tuesday's race, Hum? phrey, have all had three successes over the distance. Cuddle Doon> has been out of form for so Jong that in spite of a fair run at the trials on Thursday he Is being conceded little better than an outside chance. Happy Ending, second to Great Adlos 12 months agoi has been difficult to keep sound and C. C. Devine is just ‘‘hoping for the best” with the son of Fallacy. “An. other race or two would have made all the difference, but for all that he is pretty well," he said after Thursday’s run at the trials.

Humphrey’s form over two miles is unlikely to influence his host of admirers, who feel that he has come through a demanding preparation for the cup at a high peak of fitness.

Great Adios, winner of the cup 12 months ago, has had only two wins at the distance, as also have Atanui,

Jacobite, Co Pilot and Chief Command, while those with one are Governor Frost, Mister Chips and Spry, which 12 months ago finished third to Great Adios and Happy Ending. Spry has advanced on the list of popular fancies for Tuesday’s race as a result of his win at the eup trials. It is uncommon for one horse to compete in the cup with, no form over two miles, but this year there are two horses in that category. Cardinal Garrison has not even raced over the distance, while Miles Gentry has not shown any form over two miles. There is a growing tendency against running twomile races and if this accelerates it might not be too long, before the distance of the cup is reduced and much of the glamour disappears from New Zealand’s premier pacing eVent, which this year carries a stake of $20,000 surpassed only by the Auckland and Wellington galloping cups,
