Housing Near The Airport
Sir, —In view of the fact that the noise and fumes levels have increased and will no doubt continue to increase as more and more pure-jet aircraft use the Christchurch Airport, many people already concerned mayfind it difficult to understand how the Regional Planning Authority arrived at its decision to allow the extension of the Woodbury Strpet housing area to encroach still closer to the airport perimeter. Such a move will place houses dangerously close to the nortu-west aircraft approach lane. Not only would the occupants be subjected U intolerable noise and fumes, but their lives and homes could be jeopardised as most aircraft crashes occur on take-off and landing. The authority would do well to reconsider its decision before someone, some day, says to them, “X told you so.” — Yours, etc., NOISE CONSCIOUS. October 29, 1968. [Mr G. D. Griffiths, chairman of the Regional Planning Authority, replies: “The Regional Planning Authority determined in 1957 to restrict further urban encroachment from a plot depth north of Woodbury Street, then already a subdivision, and this was shown in its operative regional planning scheme, approved in 1959. No modifications have been made to the scheme in this respect since, and the recently recommended review of the regional scheme has held this line for, inter alia, the very reasons stated in the lettter. The authority has since successfully opposed a departure from the county district scheme seeking urban extension in this area. I am sure, therefore, that the writer would wish to support the authority in holding to its decision.”]
