OYSTER FARM
First Crop On Sale (K.Z. Prtss Association) HAMILTON, Nov. 7. The first crop of oysters from a Government experimental farm on mudflats in the Coromandel Harbour was being sold locally and on the Auckland market, said Mr B. E. Turner, district officer of the Marine Department in Auckland. The oysters, although not as large and fully developed as those being farmed in the Bay of Islands, had been selling well in the last fortnight, at the rate of 30 sacks a week. The trays were being replenished with new stocks.
It was planned to extend the farm from 500 to 1000 trays immediately this crop was sold.
It was unlikely, said Mr Turner, that the department would start any more projects in the area as the present undertaking was purely an experiment Legislation would be passed soon to permit the farming of mussels, he said.
