U.S. NAVY SPENDING
Increase Likely
Rear-Admiral J. L. Abbot, commander of he United States Navy’s Antarctic Support Force, expects to get authority soon to spend a bigger proportion of his annual budget in New Zealand. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) was assured during his recent visit to the United States that the United States Navy would have more repair and maintenance work done in New Zealand. Admiral Abbot said yesterday that increased spending in New Zealand could also cover the purchase of materials and food. At present the great bulk of dry stores, frozen foods and building materials is shipped from the United States. The Antarctic operation costs about SUSIB.7m a year, and an estimated SUSI.Sm of that is spent in New Zealand. But that includes wages paid to Americans serving in Christchurch. Admiral Abbot said the Navy might very well be spending a bigger proportion of its budget in New Zealand now if it were not for American gold-flow restrictions. He said the most promising areas of additional spending would be vehicle overhaul and the purchase of materials, but there could also be some spending on aircraft repairs. I
