CHEESE MARKET

U.K. Limit Proposed

(N.ZP.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 6.

The British Government is expected to announce this afternoon that it will shortly begin consultations with suppliers of the United Kingdom cheese market on a new proposal for the “voluntary” limitation of Cheddar exports to it

The announcement may come in the form of answers given by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Hughes) to questions asked in the House of Commons, or in a statement issued under his name by the Agriculture Ministry. It is not yet clear whether details of the new proposal will be made public by the Minister in his statements. But the scheme will probably involve attempts by the British to have suppliers agree to keep the level of their cheddar-type exports to Britain in the two-year period April 1, 1968, to March 31, 1970, at a stipulated level.

Traders do not seem to envisage any firming of the price if agreement is reached on a new scheme, largely because of the high stocks position and the fact that even under the original proposal ample supplies were permitted to reach the market.
