Rubbish Collections
Sir, —“Civic Pride” certainly has very good reason to complain. He might well take a trip to Nelson to see how well this small city solved the difficult problem. Its huge rubbish-collecting vans, completely enclosed, have only an opening sufficient to allow the special bags to be quickly and easily thrown inside. Nelson is also very well supplied with public rubbish bins. City gutters are cleaned once a day. With its broad main thoroughfare, fine shops and public buildings, but no skyscrapers, Trafalgar Street, a mile long, presents a pleasing picture. If “Civic Pride” were to walk the whole length of it he would hardly see even a scrap of paper on the footpath.—Yours, etc., FLORENCE KNIGHT. Nelson, November 6, 1968.
