TROTTING Youngest In Cup Has Not Raced Two Miles

Ordinal Garrison, the youngest in the $20,000 New Zealand Cup 'at Addington Raceway on Tuesday, at four yean will be breaking new ground—he will be making his first attempt over two miles.

It is not uncommon these days for young horses to have had little experience over the cup distance, but it is impossible to recall a horse having his first attempt at two miles in the cup race.

In spite of his lack of experience at the distance. Cardinal Garrison is expected to carry fairly heavy Auckland support in the race. Cardinal Garrison is one of nine horses competing in the cup for the first time. The field of 16. the maximum allowed by the dub, is the same size as tint of 12 months ago when Great Adios beat his rivals to win by five lengths. Great Adios is in the field again, as are Happy Ending, Spry and Allakasam, the next three to finish. Co Pilot (sixth), Cuddle Doon (seventh) and Chequer Board (fourteenth) are others to have competed last year and be among the acceptors for Tuesday’s race. Jacobite finished an unlucky third in 1965 and has done little racing since. For Cuddle Doon it will be his third attempt to win the eup. He finished sixth in 1966. Twa Iva-yaar-alda, Governor Frost and Mlles Gentry, are the second youngest horses in the field, with Atanul, Chief Command, Co Pilot, Loyal Knight and Spry being one year older.

Chequer Board, AHakaoaia, Mister Chips and Humphrey are seven year olds, while Cuddle Doon and Happy lading are eight. A year older, and the veterans of the fields, are Jacobite and Groat Adios. Twelve sires are represented tsrowte Globe (Chequer Board and Spry). Young Charles (Jacobite), Globe Direct (Mister Chips) and Morano (Humphrey), aU of which contested th. eup themselves.

Placed Twice Gentry was placed twice in the cup, finishing third to False Step in USS and second to the sons horse 12 months later. Johnny Globe had four attempts at tbs cup, winning In the world record time of 4:7 M, in UM. and finishing second in INI and uss. Globo Direct ran fourth in USS, while Young Charles Was third in UH, unplaced in U 52 and second in UM. Morano was unplaced la 1952 and be was among the early favourites for the USS race, but he had an acetdent on the eve of the contest, which was won by his halfbrothor and staMemato, Adoria n.

Iko Frost (Governor Frost) and d’Artagnan (Loyal Knight) will bo represented in the race for the first time. Fallacy (Happy Inding. Allakasam), Light Brigade (Atanui, Cuddle Doon), Garrison Hanover (Cardinal Garrison, Co -Pilot), My Chief (Chief Command) and Captain Adios (Groat Adios) are other sires represented in the race.
