NEW OPENINGS IN TEACHING
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, November 6.
Suitably qualified adults interested in full or part-time teaching in secondary schools could now enter teaching direct, or take one of three types of training courses, the Director of Secondary Education (Mr M. Hewitson) said today.
This resulted from recent Government approval of an improved staffing schedule in upper and lower sixth forms.
Mr Hewitson said that principals of secondary schools were free to appoint suitably qualified people without teacher training, but that a one-year graduate course was available at the Auckland Secondary Teachers’ College and the secondary division if Christchurch Teachers’ College. One-term courses could also be arranged, in selected secondary schools, for graduates,
near-graduates, and qualified people in scientific research, industry, bacteriology, radiography, engineering, accountancy, library work and similar occupations. During the course trainees would be paid full teachers’ salaries. A one-month refresher course could also be arranged for former trained teachers wishing to return to teaching.
Mr Hewitson said an increasing number of teaching positions would become available from now on.
