Unemployment Down 479

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 6. The number of registered unemployed fell by 479 from 5630 at October 18, to 5151 at November 1, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said today.

Male enrolments with the Labour Department fell from 4150 to 3784, and female registrations dropped from 1480 to 1367.

The number of men enrolled in the Auckland district at November 1 was 925 compared with 1035 at October 18. In Wellington-Lower Hutt the total was 188 compared with 204, in Christchurch 317 (361), and in Dunedin 105 (105).

Men employed on special Government works at November 1 numbered 2238 compared with 2867 at October 18. Mr Shand said vacancies notified to the Labour Departmnt for men numbered 2590 and for women 1075, a total of 3665. Corresponding figures at October 18 were 1846 and 861, a total of 2707. Included in the current vacancies were 1128 for skilled men and 370 for skilled women.

Figures released by the Social Security Department, the district boundaries of which closely resemble those of the Department of Labour, show that 3552 (4051 at October 18) men and women were receiving unemployment benefit at November 1. As at November 1 unemployment figures for the following districts were (figures in parentheses represent registered unemployed at October 18:
