Stockwell Likely To Win Again
The youthful B. G. Stockwell (Papanui) should continue his run of successes in the Harry Saundercock Memorial 100 kilometres cycling race at Waikari on Saturday and take fastest time for the second year in succession.
In 1966, as a 16-year-old, Stockwell came through the field from the nine-minute mark to win the race. Last year, from scratch he took fastest time. The undulating course of 16 miles, which will be lapped four times, suites Stockwell, and with W. W. Thorpe and H. R. Bush (both Papanui) and M. W. Litolff (Avon) also off scratch, there is every chance that the backmarkers will come through and win the race. The other scratch rider, R. K. Anderson (Papanui), who is Canterbury’s leading junior, may be forced to withdraw because of his commitments as a meat inspector. The third place-getter in the Timaru-to-Christchurch race last Saturday, H. van Ekeris (Avon) is well placed on the 24min mark. Should the backmarkers fail to overhaul the front marker, W. Wood (Avon), off 50min, van Ekeris has a good chance of victory.
