KENYA TO APPLY
1976 Games In Nairobi
(N.Z. PA.-Reuter—Copyright) NAIROBI.
Kenya will apply to hold the 1976 Olympic Games in Nairobi.
The decision was announced by the Minister in Charge of Sport, Mr Ronald Ngala, at a civic reception for the returning Kenyan Olympic team.
“Kenya now enjoys a good reputation in world sport and I am sure the International Olympic Committee will consider the offer,” he said. “It will all depend if we can build our Olympic standard stadium before 1976.”
Kenya’s bid would bring the Olympic Games to the African continent for the first time. But it would also set the high altitude controversy raging again as Nairobi is 5450 ft above sea level.
There was widespread disapproval of Mexico City as the venue for this year’s Olympics because of the rariCed atmosphere at 7400 ft.
