Ranking Matches
Canterbury’s leading tennis player, J. Mitchell, allowed last season’s third ranked man, R. McCutcheon, only two games when ranking matches began last evening at Wilding Park. Not all those who will take part in ranking matches were able to attend. In women’s matches, last season's second Canterbury woman, Miss R. Dillon, was beaten, 6-3, 6-2, by Miss S. Field, who did not play ranking matches last season.
Results were:— Men.—J. Mitchell beat R. McCutcheon. 6-0, 6-2; I. Stanton beat W. Thom. 6-4. 6-2: P. Boatwood beat B. Crofts. 6-3. 3-6. 6-3: J. Cullington beat W. Andersen. 3- 6-4, 6-1; B. R. Prattlev beat T. RaHe, 6-4, 7-5; R. Tuck beat D. Howorth. 6-4, 6-4; G. Clifford beat D. Greig. 2-6. 8-6. 6-3; F. Versteeg beat D. Findlay. 6-2, 4- 6-3; J. Dickie beat L. Elliott, 6-3. 7-5. Women.—Miss S. Field beat Miss R. Dillon, 6-3, 6-2; Miss S. Moore beat Mrs D. Macdonald 6-2, 5-7, 6-2; Miss G. Iredale beat Miss P. Bamford, 5-7, 6-3. 6-4; Miss E. Price beat Miss A. Meates. 6-3, 6-4: Miss G. Hampton v. Miss C. Ralfe, 4-6, 6-3 (unfinished).
